SORA v2 Launch

Published: April 2021

In early 2021, SORAMITSU launched SORA v2 — the Substrate-based mainnet that would become the foundation for the modern SORA ecosystem. This release introduced XOR, VAL, PSWAP tokens and the Polkaswap DEX, establishing SORA as a significant player in decentralized finance.

New Architecture

Complete rebuild on Substrate framework.

Token Launch

XOR, VAL, and PSWAP enter circulation.

Community Transition

Migration from SORA v1 completed.

The original SORA network:

  • Hyperledger Iroha based
  • Limited programmability
  • Focused on asset management
  • Enterprise-oriented

The upgraded network:

FrameworkIrohaSubstrate
Smart ContractsLimitedFull WASM
DeFiBasicFull Polkaswap
EcosystemStandalonePolkadot-ready

XOR debuted as the native utility token:

VAL launched for network security:

PSWAP incentivized liquidity:

The Polkaswap DEX launched alongside v2:

First trading pairs included:

  • XOR/VAL
  • XOR/PSWAP
  • XOR/ETH (via bridge)
  • Additional pairs over time

Why Substrate?

BenefitImpact
ModularityCustom pallets for SORA needs
UpgradabilityForkless runtime updates
Polkadot ReadyFuture parachain capability
Developer ToolsRich ecosystem support
  • Pallet-based modular design
  • WASM runtime for upgrades
  • Nominated PoS consensus
  • Cross-chain infrastructure ready

The launch generated significant excitement:

“This is the DeFi infrastructure we’ve been waiting for!”

“Finally, a DEX that actually aggregates liquidity properly.”

  • Validators began securing the network
  • LPs started providing liquidity
  • Traders explored Polkaswap
  • Developers built on the platform

SORA v2 established foundations that persist today:

  1. Tokenomics — XOR, VAL, PSWAP model still active
  2. Polkaswap — Continues as primary DEX
  3. GovernanceParliament builds on v2 foundation
  4. Community — Core community formed during v2 era

At launch, the roadmap included:

  • Kusama parachain (achieved 2022)
  • ✅ SORA Card development (achieved 2024)
  • 🔄 SORA v3/Nexus (in progress 2025)
